Rowland Hyle introduced Richard Harmon, a native Topeka who is a estate and tax attorney and a member of the Topeka City Commission. He discussed both taxes and current issues in the city. He provided a brief background of the federal tax code over the last 10 years. He pointed out that it is difficult for one to plan for the future because Congress keeps making changes to the Code. What is tax free one year may be taxed the next, if Congress let current laws lapse. Mr Harmon gave a “Good News, Bad News” report for Topeka. The good news was that the streets are getting fixed and business are starting to look to relocated here. The bad news is that there is way too much crime. He said that the police are not at fault because the Commission has not given them the necessary tools to fight crime. Also good news was the fact that the mill levy has been held constant.

President Ron reminded the group that the next Pancake Breakfast will be Saturday, October 1. There were no guests present. It was good to see Ted Heim back at the meeting … however, the vote was close!

Bill Kastens, Marg Denton and John Meyer were the winners of the drawings.

President Ron passed around a sign-up sheet for the Pancake Breakfast on Oct 1. Sign up for the late shift, if you can. There is a need for second-shift workers to help clean up.

The speaker was Brig. General Vic Braden, who gave a visual and oral presentation on his deployment to Afghanistan, which was very enlightening. Back in the states, Vis is a prosecuting attorney in the Office of Attorney General. After his presentation, he answered a number of questions.

President Ron announced the recipients of funds from the Club.

The drawings resulted in three winners: Leland Denton, Jim Shannon and Marge Hogue.

Ron also mentioned that he had received word that the Discovery Center was ready to train volunteers of the Club to help and the Center.
